Maru
Obi
The Maru
obi, kimono sash, were the most popular of the kimono sash in the 19th century is now rarely in use mainly
because of its bulk. The construction of a Maru obi is over
four yards in length of brocade or tapestry cloth and twenty-seven
inches wide. Because of the bulk created by the length, width
and cost of this obi make it obsolete today. The Maru obi
was most popular during the Meiji and Taisho periods, but
today is only worn with bridal kimono in traditional Japanese
weddings and the most formal occasions.
