Nagoya Obi

The Nagoya Obi, kimono sash, was made in the city of Nagoya in the late 1920’s (Taisho period) designed more for casual wear. The Nagoya obi is pre-folded and stitched in half. The narrow part wraps around the waist and the widest part of the obi forms the bow of the tie. The Nagoya obi is lighter and simpler than the Maru or Fukuro obi. Although the Nagoya obi was produced for casual wear, it has transitioned into a style more for fashion. The Nagoya obi is less expensive than the Maru or Fukuro obi, but today if the brocade or tapestry design permits, may be allowed to be worn as lower level ceremonial wear.
